Equipment Information

Having the right equipment is an important part of being prepared for a hike or campout. Good, properly maintained gear can make the difference between an enjoyable experience and a difficult one. Scouts should learn how to choose equipment that is appropriate for the weather, terrain, and length of a trip, while also understanding how to use and care for it properly.

On the trail, essentials such as sturdy footwear, appropriate clothing, a well-fitted backpack, water, navigation tools, and a first-aid kit help Scouts stay comfortable and prepared for changing conditions. At camp, a suitable sleeping bag, tent, cooking equipment, and other properly functioning gear help make the experience safer and more enjoyable. Scouts should also learn that having good equipment doesn’t necessarily mean having the most expensive equipment—it means having reliable gear that serves its purpose and knowing how to use it.

Being prepared with the right equipment is an important part of the Scout motto: Be Prepared.
